Chaverri talks at Paseo Feast #4

imgres-1

Paseo Feast is a locally sourced dinner that funds emerging art with a vote. Basically, five artists get selected to pitch a project. Attendees eat dinner with the artists, listen to the proposals, and then vote for a project. Whichever artist gets the most votes receives the funding from the night! This year the event will take place at Picasso Cafe at 6pm on April 23, 2013. I am so excited for this great opportunity!

If I were to win, the funds would go towards my collection Designing Beyond the Cure that will be shown at Oklahoma Fashion Week 2013. If you have kept up with my posts or Facebook page you know that what makes this collection so special is that the models in my portion of the show are breast cancer survivors from Oklahoma City’s first young women’s survivor group SHOUT. My project is not just about the clothes, but also about changing measurements of standard from retail sizes to an individual’s body shape.

If you would like to learn more about the project please visit: http://www.facebook.com/events/426018814161815/

Filming in Charm City

Chaverri_Charm_City

Last weekend, I flew to Baltimore for a reunion with Debra! Debra was one of the first breast cancer survivors I designed for back in 201o. She is so open and honest with her experience through treatment and recovery, it is no wonder that Bernadette Wegenstein (the documentary director) follows her story.

This image was taken by photographer, Robert Ferrell, as the documentary crew filmed Debra walking down the halls of the Breast Center for our long awaited reunion.

Helen Enox Fabric Donation

MsHelen_with_daughter

Helen Enox Fine Fabrics has graciously donated all of the fabric for Chaverri’s collection. Helen Enox started in the fabrics business in February 1963 and her store located on Southwest 59th Street, has served the Oklahoma City area for 50 years with beautiful couture fabrics. Ms. Enox was always very creative and eager to help others. One fact most people may not know about Helen Enox is that she also was a breast cancer survivor. Her family and friends now run the store and think that their contribution to Chaverri’s vision is a great tribute the Helen Enox’s memory.

OVAC Award

OVAC-Logo-2

“Organized in 1988, the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition is a non-profit organization that supports visual artists living and working in Oklahoma. OVAC promotes public interest in the arts and helps people of all ages understand the visual arts.” – ovac website

OVAC is one of the main resources artists in Oklahoma City have. Whether you know who they are or not, you have most likely seen some art funded or supported by them. I am so thankful to receive a business basic grant form such a great organization! This funding will help me with photography & videography.

For more information on OVAC check out http://www.ovac-ok.org/

Collaboration with SHOUT

banner-shout

Chaverri has connected with the breast cancer community in Oklahoma City for Fashion Week. Five of the women walking the runway in Chaverri attire are members of the organization SHOUT. Molly Ross, a survivor diagnosed at the young age of 31, founded Shout so that young women would not have to face breast cancer alone. SHOUT stands for strength, healing, optimism, and understanding together. Their mission is to provide peer support to young women cancer survivors through fellowship and outreach programs, and to increase awareness of cancer and other young women’s health issues through community education.

Documentary Features Maria Chaverri

Screen shot 2012-09-09 at 1.42.11 PM copy

Let me introduce you to The Cure. This documentary rediscovers the meaning of the breast from Saint Agatha’s martyrdom to six patients’ experiences with loss and reconstruction at a top U.S. breast cancer clinic. The documentary is still in production, but I am happy to say that I am a part of it!

This image was taken from documentary footage of the Steps to the Cure benefit fashion show and features one of my favorite models wearing a Maria Chaverri design. I am so proud to be a part of this woman’s incredible journey and so thrilled that my custom design process can help women rebuild and redefine their identity.
